The TOP predicate with ORDER BY and dates

Find the 5 most recently hired employees

Discussion:

The TOP predicate is very useful when used with dates.  In this example, we are looking for the five most recently hired employees in the corporation.  We use the DESC keyword with ORDER BY to obtain this result.  We could use the ASC keyword to retrieve the 5 most senior employees of the corporation.

SELECT TOP 5 lastname, firstname, DateofHire

FROM SalesReps

ORDER BY DateofHire DESC
